Key Position Details:

The Physician Assistant (PA) works as a part of a team in collaboration with other MHI and Abbott Northwestern Hospital team members providing care for the cardiothoracic surgical patients

  • Pre-operative Care:
    • Order and review patients medical histories and diagnostic studies
    • Perform history and physical exam
    • Assist in initial surgical consultation and pre-operative admissions
  • Intra-operative Care:
    • Provides first and second assistance for all Cardiothoracic procedures as delegated by attending Surgeon
    • Assisting with preparing and surgical draping, setting up cardiopulmonary bypass lines and other necessary equipment pertinent to the operation
    • Independently perform endoscopic and open saphenous vein harvesting
    • Independently perform chest wall and incision closure
    • Participates in a variety of procedures including but not limited to: coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair/replacement, minimally invasive therapies, heart transplants, mechanical circulatory support device implantation (LVAD/RVAD/ECMO)
    • Participates in daily, weekend and holiday call schedule
  • Post-operative Care:
    • Autonomously cares for Cardiac Surgery patients during post-operative recovery while collaborating with attending Surgeon
    • Independently performs chest tube/pacing wire removal
    • Proficient in wound care and wound vac management
    • Conducts weekly follow up clinic visits with post-operative patients
  • Demonstrates punctuality, adheres to work agreement and established attendance standards

Work Schedule:

  • 1.0 FTE
  • Monday - Friday to meet department needs
  • On call rotation for surgical emergencies
  • Weekend rotation (both rounding and on-call)
  • Average of 2 holidays/year

Job Description:

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Completes comprehensive patient assessments.
  • Determines diagnosis and treatment of illness.
  • Orders and interprets medical diagnostics in tandem with attending physician.
  • Prescribes medications, treatments, therapy and medical equipment.
  • Conducts patient education when working to manage chronic illness or wellness care.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree - Completion of accredited Physician Assistant program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • New graduates may be considered. Prefer a minimum of 2+ years of Cardiothoracic Surgical PA experience, or equivalent surgical experience in Cardiothoracic setting.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certification as a Physician Assistant - NCCPA -National Commission Certification of Physician Assistants upon hire required
  • Active MN PA license (or ability to obtain).
  • BLS certification required with in 180 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain MN DEA certification and National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Ability to meet criteria/qualifications for credentialing and hospital privileges.
